Tapspace Stompin' in Seven by David Reeves
Stompin' in Seven by David Reeves is sort of an homage to the New Orleans-style drumming of Herlin Riley - an intricate 7/8 groove that sounds relaxed, confident, and fun...but is quite a challenge to pull off. This piece is tasty enough for all the hours you'll need to play it well.
The snare drum part is what you might expect from a second-line groove, but the real fun comes in with the hi hat (which is never played with sticks) and bass drum counterplay.
Once you've mastered being able to control hi hat foot splashes and bass drum four-stroke ruffs, you should be well on your way. This piece would be an excellent, and fun, addition to any percussion recital.
