Boom Bap by Nick Werth is a classical percussion ensemble taking extensive inspiration from hip hop music. Based around a series of steady beats, but modulating metrically and otherwise frequently, this piece plays with the beat as much as it plays with sounds and colors.
The uniquely intertwined setup and the groove-based writing demands a talented ensemble, both due to the necessary communication and the high level of rhythmic understanding that is demanded. Players have to be able to subdivide in 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, and switch between the subdivisions seamlessly while maintaining a steady groove and pocket.
